After more than 50 years, the museum is leaving its original Hemisfair location in the old Texas Pavilion.
After more than 50 years curating the cultural origins of Texans — not to mention fun, education, festivals and school field trips — the Institute of Texan Cultures is closing its doors for the last time Friday at its original Hemisfair site. The University of Texas at San Antonio, which oversees the institute at 801 E. César E. Chávez Blvd., will hold a free open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “for interactive memory sharing and building excitement for the museum’s next chapter.
assumed administrative control of it in 1973 and designated it as a campus in 1986. The property hosted the three-day Texas Folklife Festival, the country’s first statewide cultural celebration, from 1972 to 2019. Some years, attendance exceeded 100,000. Spurs Sports & Entertainment has been in negotiations with the city and other parties on an “economic development project” at the site, which has been floated as a potential location for a new Spurs arena.
recently revealed plans to raze the institute’s main bunker-like structure next year — one of the last remaining buildings constructed for HemisFair '68 — and hopes to build a new 65,000-square-foot home for the museum just east of the Alamo, in a parking lot at 320 Bonham St., or at the university’s Southwest Campus, 1123 Navarro St. University officials have said it would cost $177.
