U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere marked the opening of a game-changing Las Vegas venue. The audience had a ball.
It’s called Sphere and in Las Vegas, its exterior – or exosphere – gave Friday night’s harvest moon a run for its money. The grand, glowing spherical addition to Vegas’s over-the-topness has been drawing justified awe since it first lit up the desert sky this summer . It has changed the skyline – and has been billed as a game-changer for live music.
“Hello. How are you? Where are we? Who are we?” Bono said, as live footage of the band members shot by drones appeared on the wall in bubbles. Trippy. The crowd was immersed in breathtaking digital art and tricks. The ceiling seemed to descend on us. Captured by drone, the band appeared as if they were onstage, larger than life, and live, just above where they were actually playing. The venue felt like it was being turned inside-out, as its interior walls took on the appearance of the outdoors – in Vegas, in the desert, in a sea of water. Under the sun, under the stars.
