The former Colorado Rockies and Montreal Expos all-star became just the second Canadian elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame when the inductees were announced in January. The 53-year-old Walker, known for his modest demeanour, joked that he had urged the Hall of Fame to go ahead with a fanless ceremony so he could avoid speaking to a large crowd.“I would have been happy to speak in front of a couple dozen instead,” he laughed. “That would have been perfect for me.
Still, he just narrowly made it into the Hall this year – on his 10th and final year on the ballot – receiving 76.6 per cent of the vote by members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. That pushed him over the required 75 per cent threshold by just six votes.
