Large fires in the world’s boreal forests flatten and blacken the ground, leaving it measurably warmer for more than a decade. However, a new study in the journal Nature shows this effect was not as pronounced in mixed forests, where broadleaf trees broke up the fires and helped heat dissipate.Trees scorched by B.C.'s Donnie Creek massive wildfire last July. At its peak, the fire was larger than Prince Edward Island.
On the other hand, smaller fires leave the landscape patchier, rough and with "a lot of variations in height," allowing trees to break up the flow of air to better dissipate heat, Wang says. It found areas dominant in these trees had little to no warming effects years later — suggesting these species could play a helpful role by limiting the spread of a wildfire.
