Langley woman instrumental in setting up US memorial forest as a teen
On Dec. 12, 1985, Major General Burton Patrick was in Washington, D.C., testifying before a committee when General Norman Schwarzkopf interrupted the proceedings and approached him to say something was wrong.
“In my 30-year career in the military, I’ve never done anything worse than burying those soldiers,” said Patrick, who broke down in tears while speaking with Postmedia News recently. “To help me understand the magnitude of it, she compared it to 10 of my high school classrooms with each person in those classrooms losing a family member shortly before Christmas,” said Janice Nikkel, now 49, and a Langley mother of four.
Although it was before the internet, Nikkel’s plea went viral thanks to newswires, and the teen was suddenly giving interviews to global news outlets. It caught the attention of Frank Lockyear, a Washington state businessman who planted a living memorial forest after the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption.In September 1986, Nikkel attended and spoke at a service in Fort Campbell dedicating the trees. She was later honoured by then prime minister Brian Mulroney and then U.S.
