Foster, a two-time Olympian who hails from Langley, knows the feeling of support a Thunderbird crowd offers and she felt it again recently when she rode Northern Light to victory in the $414,300 Major League Show Jumping Gand Prix in front of a packed stadium at Thunderbird on May 27.
“There’s some truth in that build-it-and-they-will-come from Field of Dreams’ thing. You create a facility like that, and it enhances, stimulates and encourages the whole sport,” said Millar, a two-time winner of the Show Jumping World Cup and Olympic silver medallist. “People get better training, better horses. It gives them a goal and they rise to that. And that’s exactly what has happened in British Columbia. The sport is very, very strong in British Columbia.
The family Millar speaks of are George’s and Dianne’s four kids: Kathy Tidball Robbins, Stephen Tidball, Jane Tidball and Laura Tidball Balisky. While top international riders including Olympic champions have competed at Thunderbird, local competitors are also a main focus for team tbird as they’re the future of the sport and paramount in supporting the large Lower Mainland equestrian industry.
“Bringing this kind of top-level competition to B.C. I think motivates people to do more. Thunderbird is propelling that forward,” said Foster, who is in the midst of setting up a new home training facility in Langley.
