An investigation by the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) found that Langley RCMP officers were not criminally responsible for a woman's leg fracture sustained during an arrest in January 2024. The woman, who was intoxicated, claimed to have been assaulted prior to the police encounter.
Langley RCMP officers were cleared of any criminal wrongdoing in their handling of a woman who sustained a leg fracture while intoxicated and in police custody in January 2024. The incident prompted an investigation by the Independent Investigations Office (IIO), whose report was released publicly on January 12, 2025. The IIO's findings revealed that police responded to multiple calls reporting a disturbance at a Langley City apartment building on January 12, 2024.
Upon arrival, officers encountered a woman who exhibited signs of intoxication, including bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and difficulty with motor function. The woman claimed she had been assaulted by someone who punched her in the head, but she provided limited details to the officers. According to witness accounts and police reports, the woman's behavior escalated when she insisted residents join her for drinks, leading to a confrontation and ultimately her arrest for causing a disturbance. During the arrest, the woman resisted, attempting to flee into a bathroom. While being subdued, she sustained a knee injury that later resulted in a fractured tibial plateau being diagnosed at the hospital the following day. The IIO concluded that the level of force used by officers was not excessive given the woman's resistance, but acknowledged a lapse in ensuring her safety during the transfer from the police vehicle.
