This is part two in Sudbury.com’s three-part deep dive into the Lake Wanapitei boating tragedy of June 30, 2013, which resulted in three deaths and prompted an inquiry yielding various recommended changes to how emergency situations are communicated

The Lake Wanapitei boating tragedy of June 30, 2013, is something John Salvalaggio said he will always remember, down to its specific details.

Although one of the boaters, Robert Dorzek, survived the night, Matthew Humeniuk and Michael Kritz died at the scene, and Stephanie Bertrand would die later in hospital. There are various points in the response Salvalaggio is able to cite in which emergency personnel could have shaved off enough response time to save at least one more life that night.“We would have been probably a half-hour earlier, and we wouldn’t have waited for the ambulance,” he said, also questioning why they were told to wait for paramedics.

“It was hard for a little while. We had to have a few sessions to meet and talk about it and whatnot, and it took until after the inquest that I could talk without being emotional.” The coroner’s jury left the inquest with 19 recommendations for the province and eight recommendations for municipalities. Many of the recommendations centred around improving 911 services and communication between emergency services departments. Click here for a full breakdown of the jury’s 27 recommendations.

Many of the recommendations will be addressed in the province’s shift to Next-Generation 911 service, the letter notes, which will allow call centres and emergency responders to digitally transmit and receive text messages, locations, images, video and other data. The Joint Emergency Services Advisory Group formed in 2014 to “implement positive change through improvements to equipment, training and procedures, with a focus on information sharing and multi-agency responses to various emergency incidents.”
