The Fed’s Lael Brainard is set to be named Biden’s National Economic Council director, people familiar with the matter say, at a delicate time for the economy
She will succeed Brian Deese as the director of the National Economic Council, which is responsible for advising the president on policy and personnel decisions and coordinating policy making across executive branch agencies. Mr. Deese is planningThe White House declined to comment. Mr. Biden is expected to announce her appointment as soon as this week, the people said. Bloomberg earlier reported that the president had chosen Ms.
Ms. Brainard, who grew up in West Germany and communist Poland as the daughter of a U.S. diplomat, also could be tasked with managing the continued economic fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Analysts have speculated that by taking the NEC job, Ms. Brainard would be in a leading position to succeed Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen should Mr. Biden win re-election next year.in 2020, but Ms. Brainard’s candidacy drew flak from left-wing party activists who groused that she didn’t advance a more progressive agenda under Messrs. Obama and Clinton.
