The Town of Ladysmith implemented a $10-fee for all general Freedom of Information (FOI) requests this week.
The decision to charge for general FOI requests became effective Oct. 16 after staff received a rising number of requests to process in the past year, according to town staff.
Indigenous governing entities are exempt from paying application fees and there are specific circumstances where the fee is exempt for members of the public or can be disputed.of the B.C. Freedom of Information and Privacy Act the fee may be waived by a public body under the following circumstances:the record relates to a matter of public interest, including the environment, or public health or safety.
As for the Town of Ladysmith, McKay says the fee is “not intended to limit public access, but rather to balance the time spent on providing other community services. This measure will ensure the quality and timeliness of responses while continuing to uphold the principles of transparency and accountability.”
