NSTopinion: As such, the ministry should have promoted interest in the art form (mak yong) through formal and informal education and performances by giving financial aid to cultural bodies.
The Unesco recognition is usually given to endangered intangible traditional art forms that reflect the finesse of a nation’s cultural tradition. It is, therefore, incumbent on the host country to ensure sustainability in its authentic original form.
One would expect that after gaining the recognition, the ministry would redouble efforts to develop mak yong as a premier performance art through a dedicated training programme for performers/musicians. Just recently it lifted the ban, not because it wants to resuscitate the almost dying art form, but more so out of political expediency as a result of its political pact with Umno, its former nemesis.
As a result of this decline, universities have instituted courses to sustain the art form as an academic pursuit rather than for developing practitioners.
