Cleveland Heights-University Heights Schools didn't get the former Wiley school building properly inspected before agreeing to allow Hebrew Academy of Cleveland to temporarily use the building. When preliminary inspections were done, University Heights had to move its council meeting Sept. 5 from its usual site at Wiley, to the John Carroll University campus.

The former Wiley School building has been again pressed into action as a school as temporary home for Hebrew Academy of Cleveland classes.UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- For the last two years, University Heights City Council has held its meetings in what had been the library in the former Wiley Middle School building, but that was not the case Tuesday .

“On Monday, Aug. 28, the Wiley building failed inspection by our fire department on seven of eight state fire code items, and failed inspection by our building department on 18 state building code items,” Brennan said. “Following those inspections, the school district advised through a representative that the Wiley building was closed to all outside agencies until the building was made safe.”

“CH-UH School district employees and contractors, and city of University Heights employees and the city’s building department and chief building official, worked all week last week to remedy conditions,” Brennan said at the council meeting. “On Friday morning , Wiley passed fire inspection, but again failed building inspection.”stated on Sept. 7, “At no time has CH-UH School District or HAC formally filed for an occupancy permit or anything else with the City Building Department.

While Wiley passed a limited inspection on Labor Day, that inspector, Brennan said, did not have available Chief Building Inspector Denis Garcia’s notes so, in deference to Garcia, an occupancy permit was not issued.
