Clearly Labor has a difficult tightrope to walk in balancing the needs of their union base with the needs of an immigration nation like Australia.Although the conventional wisdom is that labour migration creates jobs and is an economic win, this does not hold true when migrants are being recruited for an ulterior motive.

There are real risks of Australian workers being displaced by migrant workers in certain industries where there is a large pool of local graduates. We know from the past two decades that some industries and employers have used temporary migrants to entrench low wages by using this cohort to create a precarious workforce willing to work harder and be more compliant because of a lack of power and security in the labour market.
