Monday marked the 108th anniversary of events widely viewed by scholars as the first genocide of the 20th century, when Ottoman Empire authorities on April 24, 1915, arrested Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Constantinople and pursued vast carnage in which an estimated 1.5 million people were killed.

Gavin Newsom signed into law a bill establishing Genocide Remembrance Day as a state holiday to be observed on April 24, permitting public schools and community colleges to choose to close in honor of the day.
