The NBA’s annual trade deadline, shaping up as underwhelming — as it often does before things break loose anyway — needed an accelerant to light a fire.
Teams that were interested in Irving, headlined by the Lakers and Clippers, might need to duke it out for their Plan B options, though many around the league Sunday evening went back to predicting things could still be slow on the trade front. The Nets did about as well as could be expected given Irving’s overstuffed mixed bag of talent and turmoil, plus the fact he'll be an unpredictable, unrestricted free agent after the season. .
If he forces his way out of town the way James Harden and Irving did before him, those picks could get better still.
