After violence erupted at a Chicago rally in solidarity with Israel, I am mad. From what I have seen, my Jewish Muslim neighbors are the same.
This week, as helicopters circled over our neighborhood, and 30-plus cop cars flashed their blue lights, I cried. Just down the street was a melee. Unwittingly, we had driven right into it on our way to get sushi for dinner. Outside our primarily kosher Mariano’s grocery store, we saw the sea of flickering blue lights, red whirring ambulance lights and a large tanklike truck resembling a SWAT team unit. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered to extol pro-Israel or pro-Palestine sentiments.
Their resilience and determination to build a new life in America, where everything, including the language, is different, is laudable. We’ve often exclaimed how much we love this majestic city, in hopes they recognize Chicago as their home. These past few years have proved heartwarming as I’ve come to know and love these two families. They are incredibly kind and humble and generous. They are funny, too. Joking around.
