This month, the National Post editorial board is debating the greatest action movies of all time, among ourselves and invited experts.
Why The Rock? Without a doubt, Terminator 2 resonates more emotionally, even with the allergic-to-emotion members of. Die Hard has Alan Rickman. Predator stars not one but two future governors . But The Rock stands above them all because, well, Sean Connery, and because it is the ultimate 1990s action movie. Also it was nominated for an Oscar.
The movie centres around Dr. Stanley Goodspeed who is an FBI chemical weapons expert, and the only person able to foil the plot of Brigadier General Francis Hummel in his take over of the island prison Alcatraz, and eventual goal of annihilating the population of San Francisco.Elan Mastai: Die Hard is obviously the greatest action movie ever. Give your head a shake if you disagree
The plot of The Rock however takes a back seat to what makes all 90s action movies awesome — explosions and one liners. Now I was asked to include some of the one-liners but this is a family newspaper so lets just say there are a colourful collection of winners. But, this film is perfection because of Sean Connery. I don’t know anyone born in the 80s who doesn’t think of him and immediately remembers Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade. He might always be James Bond forever to our parents but to us he is always Dr. Jones in the last Indiana Jones film I will recognize. Now, the brilliance of Sean Connery is that he is always Scottish no matter what country he is supposed to be from. In the Hunt for Red October where he is a Russian captain? Scottish.
