Kraven the Hunter's new origin story and abilities tease a common theme in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, but other Marvel characters suggest otherwise.
The updated origin of Kraven the Hunter's titular anti-hero teases a new connection with other Spider-Man villains, but future Sony projects already contradict it. After Venom and Morbius' introduction in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, it's Kraven's turn to star in his own live-action movie. But while Aaron Taylor-Johnson's take on Kraven seems mostly faithful to the source material, there's one big change Sony has made to the character.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In Marvel Comics, Sergei Kravinoff a.k.a. Kraven the Hunter is a regular human with an obsession for hunting. Although Kraven has ingested an elixir that granted him augmented strength, agility, speed, endurance, and health, Kraven doesn't have any full-fledged superpowers like Spider-Man or Morbius. It's his ruthlessness and ingenuity that makes him such a dangerous character worthy of a spot in the Sinister Six.
Kraven's Power Change Could Bring The Sonyverse Together - But That Still Doesn't Quite Make Sense The first Kraven the Hunter trailer reveals that Kraven developed special abilities after getting bitten by a lion. This makes Kraven more similar to Venom, Carnage, Morbius, and Sony's new version of Rhino — all regular humans who gain superpowers from contact with another living being's genetic material.
Following this pattern, villains such as Vermin, Jackal, the Lizard, Vermin, and superpowered versions of Scorpion and Black Cat could round out Sony's Sinister Six. Even lesser-known characters like Puma, Tarantula, and the Human Fly could join in. However, Sony already broke the theme with the multiversal incorporation of Michael Keaton's Vulture and the future introduction of El Muerto and Hypno-Hustler — a smuggler, a luchador and a musician, respectively.
How Kraven The Hunter Can Still Bring The Sony Spider-Verse Together Kraven may not be establishing a common theme, but that doesn't mean the franchise can't have a more defined through line. As the characters most akin to superheroes in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, Venom, Morbius, Vulture, Rhino, El Muerto, and Hypno-Hustler could be Kraven the Hunter's prize collection.
