A recent data breach affecting the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board (KPDSB) has raised concerns about the potential exposure of sensitive information belonging to students, families, and staff dating back to 2015. The breach involved PowerSchool, a widely used cloud-based software provider. KPDSB is working to inform affected individuals and provide guidance on protective measures.

An investigation into the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board data breach has revealed that the incident could potentially impact data belonging to KPDSB students, their families, and staff dating back to 2015. The breach involved PowerSchool, a widely used external provider that manages functions such as student personal information and communication with parents.

PowerSchool, a California-based provider of cloud software to over 16,000 customers in more than 90 countries, informed families that they were affected by the cyberattack. The KPDSB has created a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document to support those affected, outlining details about the breach, the types of data potentially impacted, and steps individuals can take to protect themselves. KPDSB is urging families to remain vigilant following the breach and recommends regular monitoring of email and online accounts, updating passwords to make them stronger, exercising caution with unfamiliar calls, messages, or emails, and avoiding suspicious links. The Lakehead Public District School Board (LPDSB) and Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board (TBCDSB) were also affected by the data breach and are currently assessing the exact information that may have been accessed or exported from the application. The Rainy River District School Board (RRDSB) informed students and parents about the data breach in a note detailing their response to the situation. Heather Campbell, director of Education, stated in the note to parents and caregivers that they are working with PowerSchool to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident's nature and the potential personal information affected. PowerSchool has confirmed that the unauthorized data has been deleted. Campbell acknowledged that the news might be concerning but assured parents that the district is actively collaborating with PowerSchool to understand the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available
