Kori Cheverie has been named head coach of Canada's women's national hockey team and will lead the squad at the 2026 IIHF Women's World Championship in Denmark this November. Cheverie, also head coach of the PWHL's Montreal Victoire, says she is still a pioneer in the game.

Canada has a new head coach for its women's national hockey team. Kori Cheverie, the current bench boss of the PWHL's Montreal Victoire, will lead the squad at the 2026 IIHF Women's World Championship in Denmark this November.

Kori Cheverie Appointed National Team Coach

Cheverie, who previously served as an assistant coach with the national team, described her reaction to the appointment. I had a lot of emotions, I was in shock and I was excited, she said. Beyond chasing a gold medal, Cheverie shared broader goals for the program. I want to continue to provide our country with a program that they can be proud of, a program that the players are going to keep getting better, she said.

Cheverie traced her love of hockey back to her childhood in Pictou County, N.S. , almost 30 years ago. Hockey was something that I saw my friends play. It was on TV, and I loved The Mighty Ducks movie and that was my big push and draw towards the sport, she said.

She recalled how limited family finances shaped her start in the game. At the time, my mom was a single parent starting a business, and with three kids, there wasn't a lot of money to go into extracurricular activities, she said. So, I asked her if I could have a yard sale to come up with the money for the equipment, and she agreed to pay for the registration, and that's how my story started.

Cheverie said that early experience shaped her approach to work. I think that's really important, because that's where I get my work ethic from, she added. As a young girl, Cheverie dreamed of one day being named to the national team, though not in the role she now holds. At the time when I was a young girl, I didn't think it would be through coaching, she said.

Cheverie Inspires Young Female Coaches

I thought I was going to play on the team, but the moment came and it is a pretty surreal moment. Young female coaches see Cheverie's career trajectory as a path to follow. Jennifer Marando, who coaches an under-15 girls AAA hockey team in Dartmouth, said the appointment will have a broad impact.

I think seeing her there is going to encourage a lot of girls to go into leadership positions, not necessarily coaching hockey, but just being confident in leadership roles, Marando said. Savannah Newton, a former Boston University defender who played four seasons of NCAA hockey, echoed that view. I think this is the see her, be her kind of mentality, Newton said. Because Kori is taking this on, it's exactly what young girls need to see.

Cheverie takes over at an exciting time for women's hockey in Canada. The Professional Women's Hockey League has surged in popularity, and the league's first-ever All-Star event will take place in March. Cheverie said she wants to make the most of the moment. I get to be a part of this extremely special time, and I want to continue to help build, said Cheverie, who is also the head coach of the Montreal Victoire.

Cheverie Leads Growth in Canadian Hockey

I'm still a pioneer in the game. I want to put the game in a better place every time I step on the ice, every time I step behind the bench and when I get in front of the players. The national team announced the hiring as women's hockey continues to grow in visibility and support across the country. Cheverie's dual role with the Montreal Victoire and the national team places her at the center of that growth.

Canada will look to Cheverie to guide the program at the 2026 IIHF Women's World Championship in Denmark this November. Her players and supporters will be watching closely as she begins her tenure as head coach.
