TORONTO — Calgary’s Team Kevin Koe secured the Pinty’s Cup as the overall season points champions in the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling.
Koe cashed in the title and the $75,000 bonus prize after advancing to the Players’ Championship men’s final with a 9-8 extra-end win Saturday night over Team Peter de Cruz of Switzerland.Lead Ben Hebert is the only other holdover from the previous Olympic cycle club that represented Canada at the Pyeongchang Winter Games and claimed the Players’ Championship a year ago. Edmonton’s Team Brendan Bottcher meets Koe in Sunday’s Battle of Alberta final and a rematch of the Brier gold-medal game. Bottcher beat Scotland’s Team Ross Paterson 7-4 to reach their third Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling final of the season. Team Bottcher finished runners-up at the Tour Challenge Tier 1 in November and captured their first title in the series at the Meridian Canadian Open in January.
Fate was in Team Koe’s hands to clinch the Pinty’s Cup thanks to a consistent season as the only way Team Bottcher would have been able to score enough points for the title would have been if they faced Team De Cruz in the final and defeated them, too.More from Sportsnet
