Mets first baseman Pete Alonso will have some company in Seattle next week after starting pitcher Kodai Senga was named as a National League All-Star replacement on Saturday.Through 16 starts this season, Senga has a 7-5 record with a 3.31 ERA and 113 strikeouts while using his signature ghost forkball to puzzle opposing hitters.
There have certainly been adjustments and growing pains, such as when he allowed four runs against the Cardinals on June 17 or multiple against St. Louis, the A’s and the Giants.But Senga has emerged as one of the Mets’ most consistent rotation options — even in a group including Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander — through their first-half disappointment.
In his final start before the break against the Diamondbacks, Senga tossed a career-best eight innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out 12., a contest that he has already won twice.
