Australia has listed koalas as an endangered species in some parts of the country after a dramatic decline in numbers.
Last year, a New South Wales inquiry found that koalas would be extinct there by 2050 unless there was urgent action.
With their previous ‘vulnerable’ status, the Australian government had committed to developing a recovery plan for koalas by 2014 which never materialised.‘The impact of prolonged drought, followed by the Black Summer bushfires, and the cumulative impacts of disease, urbanisation and habitat loss over the past 20 years have led to the advice,’She said officials were designing a recovery plan, and land development applications would now be assessed for impacts on the species.
