The latest-generation Civic hit Canadian roads about five years ago now, launching in 2015 for model-year 2016. Offering up numerous body styles, powertrains and trim grades, selection was abundant. Also abundant? New features and tech that helped make the latest Civic smarter, more connected and more powerful.
Many variables are at play. This is why it’s impossible to assign an accurate standard reliability “score” across all used vehicles of a given vintage. So forget the badge on the hood. That’s not what makes a used car reliable. Checking for oil dilutionSome owners have reported engine problems with the Civic’s 1.5-litre turbo engine. Many have not. Dubbed ‘oil dilution,’ the issue stems from certain conditions that may allow gasoline to enter the engine’s oil supply – perhaps moreso in cold weather, or when the vehicle frequently makes short trips that don’t allow the engine to heat up fully – leading to various problems, including severe engine damage.
Watching for air-con issuesSome owners say their Civic’s A/C condenser may be vulnerable to damage from road debris. Check the A/C by blasting it fully after your test drive when the engine is good and hot, parking the car, and ensuring a steady stream of cold air comes out. Problems in these areas are generally easy to fix with a software update or hard reset of the system, but in some cases may require pricey replacement parts.During your test drive, pull the cargo floor cover out of the Civic’s trunk, exposing the bare metal body beneath. Look for signs of dampness, mildew, mould, rust, or standing water. Inspect nearby trunk carpeting for signs of water staining as well.
Some owners say that niggling electronic problems like these may result from a weak or dying battery. Have the charging system and battery checked, replacing the battery as needed. In any case, buying a used car with a warning light or message is not advised until it’s been inspected by a professional.
