KUALA LUMPUR: All telecommunication companies (telcos) must block any URL link in their short message service to prevent consumers from becoming victims of online fraud, says the Communications and Digital Ministry (KKD).
KKD, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission , has issued the directive to all telcos, said its Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching.
“The MCMC has given this directive to telcos to ensure that no one presses [clicks on] the wrong URL and possibly ends up as victim [of a scam]. “Several online scams happen when people click on the wrong link, and after giving their personal information, they find themselves being scammed,” she told Bernama after appearing as a guest on AiFM in conjunction with RTM’s 77th anniversary celebration here yesterday.
However, she said the directive will come into effect in phases and hoped that the companies involved will be able to begin implementing the directive soon. Meanwhile, on RTM’s 77th anniversary, Teo said RTM, which has great potential, will continue to be a loyal friend to its audience and ensure that listeners get the latest news fast.
