Poilievre got to where he is by shedding some of his negatives. Politics is mostly about optics and, to be blunt, the newly-minted Conservative Leader too often resembled an angry nerd — the kind who would hang out in the high school physics lab with the other angry nerds, disinterested in sports and sock hops.
Along with the change in visuals, there’s been a change in tone, too. When Poilievre rudely dismissed a woman’s Niagara Falls home as “a shack” to make a political point, the woman was upset. Poilievre called her and apologized, personally.
There will be the usual criticisms: that the Conservatives, and Poilievre, are — if not openly racist and misogynistic — then indifferent to racism and misogyny; that Poilievre and his cabal have a secret agenda to make abortion and gay marriage illegal; that Poilievre and Co. want to privatize health care and burn more fossil fuels.Article content
Why isn’t Trudeau attacking Poilievre with this stuff now, you ask? Well, it’s summertime, and nobody is paying attention to politics. There’s no election happening anytime soon. So, Poilievre has achieved a ten-point lead without experiencing the sort of scrutiny he’ll get in a weeks-long national election campaign.
