“The night of St. Patrick’s Day into the following day, we see mostly the consequences of excessive drinking,” he said. Those consequences can include central nervous system depression, occasional respiratory failure, and those who are injured by drunk drivers or themselves. According to Greene, 0.6 fluid ounces of alcohol is considered a standard drink. That equates to a 12-ounce beer, four ounces of wine, or one-and-a-half ounces of 40 percent liquor. The effects of the alcohol take time to wear off. Most people can metabolize alcohol at a rate of about 15 mg/dL per hour, he said.“To get below 80 so that they could drive legally, it would take them approximately two hours provided they have nothing else to drink, to achieve 70 mg/dL,” he said.
If the dreaded hangover comes, Greene suggests drinking water and taking ibuprofen unless prohibited for whatever reason. He also recommended some over-the-counter supplements that have shown some benefits including prickly pear extract, milk thistle, magnesium, and selenium.Old wives’ tales like drinking raw eggs or eating pickled herring have no effect, he said.
“When it comes to liquor, the darker it is, which means more congeners that contributes to the headaches, the more likely you are to have a hangover,” he described. That means vodka and gin are less likely to create the headaches while whiskey, bourbon, and some rums are more likely to cause them.“Obviously, pregnant women shouldn’t drink, and people who are on medications that cause sedation shouldn’t drink either,” he said.
