Ontario's Ministry of Health says the supervised drug consumption site in Kingston has officially switched to a HART Hub, marking the end of an era for such provincially funded sites.it was "ending funding for the last remaining provincially funded drug injection site," and that it would close Sept. 30.

The new HART Hub is at 661 Montreal St., the same location that housed Kingston's Integrated Care Hub. The HART Hub offers mental health and addictions support, primary care, supportive housing and employment services, the ministry said.

"This approach responds directly to local public safety concerns associated with drug injection sites by providing real, long-term support to vulnerable residents while protecting local parks, community areas and other public spaces," the ministry said Friday in a news release. HART Hubs do not offer safer supply, supervised drug consumption or needle exchange programs. Some offer needle returns. The closure will have a significant impact on clients, staff and the community, the organization running the site said at the time.

It had been operating at that location since 2020. Each HART Hub can take a slightly different approach to address specific local needs. The ministry said the Kingston hub includes more than 50 transitional and supportive housing units, showers, a variety of programs and referrals to other services. Partners include the city and its police service, the local health unit and hospital, the United Way and the The Kingston Native Centre and Language Nest.

Other HART Hubs in eastern Ontario are in Belleville, Brockville, Pembroke, Smiths Falls and two in Ottawa. There are now 29 across the province.
