The city is warning dog owners to ask for identification if someone comes to their house asking about their pets

If you are a dog owner living in Kingston and somebody comes to your house claiming they are from the city, ask for identification.

The city is warning pet-owning residents that a person might be impersonating a city employee to gain access to their pets and possibly abduct them. According to a public notice from the city of Kingston, the person might be driving a white van and might also claim they are following up on a barking complaint.

“If City of Kingston bylaw enforcement officers are responding to complaints of dogs barking we will attend a residence and speak to the owners,” said Lacricia Turner, manager, licensing and enforcement. “We would never show up at a home and take someone’s dog based on a noise complaint.” The public notice was prompted by reports of possible impersonations earlier this week. The city of Kingston also reminds its citizens that the city’s bylaw enforcement officers wear full uniforms and drive numbered vehicles marked with the Kingston logo.
