Once contact is established, scammers demand personal information or valuable assets, such as cash, gift cards or cryptocurrencies.

Recent emails falsely accuse recipients of visiting explicit websites, including child pornography, and threaten to report them to authorities if they don't comply. This scam is widespread, with many cases likely going unreported. Legitimate organizations, including the police, do not employ such tactics or threats.

Sgt. Wayne Ross of Nova Scotia RCMP's Commercial Crime Section advises caution, recommending verifying the source independently through official contact details. “Should you get any form of communication, and you are questioning the source, then reach out to that organization by a contact that you have obtained directly on your own, for example from a phonebook or its legitimate website,” said Ross.Ross stresses the importance of sharing experiences and knowledge with family, friends, neighbours and colleagues to prevent potential victims.
