A live-action KingKong series - set outside of the MonsterVerse - from James Wan and Stephanie Folsom is in early development at Disney+.
King Kong is coming to Disney+ in a new series from James Wan. King Kong is one of the most iconic figures across cinema, with his 1933 film being a landmark achievement in motion picture history. The mighty ape-like monster was created by filmmaker Merian C. Cooper.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Since then, King Kong has been realized on the big screen many times over the years, from the 1976 remake to Peter Jackson's own 2005 remake. Most recently, Kong has been a major player in Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse film series, making appearances in 2017's Kong: Skull Island and 2021's Godzilla vs Kong.
It is worth noting this King Kong project will not be connected to the MonsterVerse, like the planned Godzilla series set up at Apple TV+. However, Netflix is still reportedly developing an animated series set on Skull Island that is connected to the MonsterVerse; it is unknown if Kong is part of that story. Kong will appear on the big screen again in the sequel to Godzilla vs.
In 2017, following Kong: Skull Island, there was an attempt to make a live-action King Kong series. However, it never panned out and might have morphed into this new project on Disney+. King Kong's film rights and character rights are split up among various individuals, thus allowing for multiple iterations of the character to exist at once.
