King County leaders are set to hear the final update on a controversial plan to end youth detention by next year.

An advisory committee has been working on the steps to close King County’s Judge Patricia H. Clark Children and Family Justice Center in 2025 in a push forLast month, King County Executive Dow Constantine said that would not happen next year and that the proposal would not move forward until at least 2028.

The latest reports from law enforcement across the region show a surge in violent crimes involving teenagers, like robberies and car thefts, fueled by social media trends. According to the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs, more than 6,000 juveniles were arrested statewide in 2022. Nearly half of those kids were between 13 and 15 years old.“Ideally we want to be preventative, we want to be proactive, we want to work with our community, our school districts, our prosecutors to wrap support around young people before they’re engaging in any type of harmful behavior,” Choose 180 Executive Director Nneka Payne said.
