Exclusive: Kinder Foundation announces $2 million gift for Discovery Green's 15th anniversary
Nancy and Rich Kinder at the Gala on the Green benefitting the Discovery Green Conservancy Saturday Feb. 27,2010. In 2008, Nancy and Rich Kinder's transformational gift of $10 million helped found Discovery Green, a 12-acre park in the center of downtown Houston. The Brown Foundation gave another $10 million, and Houston Endowment followed suit. The Wortham Foundation contributed $5 million.
"The Kinders came to us," said Barry Mandel, CEO of Discovery Green Conservancy."Nancy said before, the park is going to need an endowment one day to ensure its future. So we're going to give you this gift." The conservancy currently operates on a $5 million annual budget. Mandel estimates Discovery Green has generated nearly $2 billion worth of neighborhood construction projects.
