Killing at Lamar High School, shooting at Thomas Jefferson will change nothing | Opinion
and the shooting of another at Thomas Jefferson High School in Dallas should be the sort of shocks that shake us into action.We have become numb to the harm and deaths of our children. If only one child is gunned down and if the shooting wasn’t random, we are conditioned now to pay it little mind beyond the news cycle.
The place to start is with our absurd gun laws. The foolish, ahistorical interpretation of the Second Amendment has left us awash in weapons of war that no child should ever be able to access. A society so free with weapons that a child can easily obtain them and use them to kill classmates has misunderstood the intentions of its founders and misplaced its ability to reason.
But there is more to this story. We have to ask ourselves what we are teaching our children about the value of human life, about its precious nature, about the way taking a life is the deepest offense one human can commit against another. The popular culture certainly is not. It is enthralled with the stupid glorification of violence. Guns are symbols of power; violence is the expression of power.
