On Jody Wilson-Raybould issue, Justin Trudeau just proved the existence of white privilege.
It is both ironic and tragic that an Indigenous woman, representing two causes Prime Minister Trudeau has supposedly championed, has initiated his fall from grace.
Wilson-Raybould was not the only woman in cabinet. Yet few of her female cabinet colleagues defended her against ruthless character assassination. Most clearly chose a side: the prime minister’s.Even two visible minority female cabinet members, Maryam Monsef and Bardish Chaggar, have remained silent. The former even happily accepted an additional portfolio in the cabinet reshuffle caused by Wilson-Raybould’s departure. All in the name of maintaining the unity of the Liberal caucus, I imagine.
White privilege is so subconsciously ingrained that it is almost subsumed in their DNA. If global society were not as interconnected as it is today, we would not even be speaking of diversity and reconciliation in the Western world.
