Kevin Sumlin is back in college football.
Sumlin, the former head coach at Texas A&M, Arizona and Houston, has landed an assistant coaching job at Maryland. Sumlin will serve as the associate head coach, co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach on Mike Locksley’s staff. It’s his first job in college football since he was fired by Arizona after the 2020 season.
Sumlin, 58, was a college assistant for nearly 20 years before he became the head coach at Houston in 2008. He amassed a 35-17 record at UH, including a 12-win season in 2011 that propelled him to Texas A&M, where he previously had a two-year stint as an assistant. A&M went 9-4 in 2013 and then lost five games in each of Sumlin’s final four seasons with the program. He had a 51-26 record at A&M, but was fired following the 2017 season.
