Kevin Smith confirms that HBO Max's DC Comics series, Strange Adventures, has officially been canceled after several years of development. Since the launch of HBO Max, Warner Bros. has been attempting to bring more original content from the many properties that they own. One of their major franchises that were going to utilize more on the HBO-branded service was the DC Universe, with original shows like Titans, Doom Patrol, or spinoffs related to the DCEU and The Batman universe.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While the DCEU and The Batman-verse have managed to get projects off the ground, Warner Bros. TV has also worked on other DC TV shows. In October 2019, HBO Max announced that they were developing a Green Lantern TV series, which got picked up to series a year later for a 10-episode order. However, HBO Max also unveiled that they were developing a DC anthology series, Strange Adventures, also executive produced by Arrowverse's Greg Berlanti.
"It feels like what was once, to me, a promising future of we are going to see a bunch of DC stuff on HBO Max; MORE DC stuff than we would see theatrically, including shit like Strange Adventures...gone! All of it is just f---king gone now.
Smith also revealed that Strange Adventures was eying Nicholas Cage to play Bizarro, but that they never had him locked in for a contract. This revelation came as part of their discussion of Warner Bros. Discovery having made the shocking decision to cancel the Batgirl movie earlier this week. With both Batgirl and Strange Adventures scrapped, it has left many to wonder what other DC properties may or already have been canceled by the new regime at Warner Bros. Discovery.
While there hadn't been any updates on Strange Adventures since the initial announcement, what Smith shared made the show sound even more intriguing. This is the first time Smith has even mentioned that he had been approached to work on Strange Adventures, following his previous collaborations with Berlanti as he directed episodes of The Flash and Supergirl. Warner Bros.
