After being relegated to the end of Kentucky's bench in recent weeks, freshman wing Kahlil Whitney has decided to leave the program.

In 18 games at Kentucky, Whitney averaged 3.3 points and 1.7 rebounds per game.

By leaving now, Whitney could transfer to another program and enroll for the spring semester, becoming eligible to play again by spring 2021 at the latest, though he did not specify his future plans. It's possible he could pursue a professional career or focus on preparing for the NBA draft in June. Former Kentucky guard Quade Green transferred to Washington before the spring semester last season and was granted a waiver from the NCAA to play in the fall instead of sitting out the two semesters normally required of transfers.Freshmen Keion Brooks and Johnny Juzang had taken away most of Whitney's minutes in recent games and figure to continue to see larger roles off the bench alongside graduate student forward Nate Sestina.

"First and foremost, Kahlil is a great kid," Calipari said in a news release. “This is tough for me because Kahlil is a tremendous person who is going to do great things. I certainly don’t want to see him go because I wanted to continue to coach him, but I understand his decision and, as we always do here, will support him in whatever way we can.

"As I told Kahlil today, I hope he goes on and does his thing and makes us all proud. I know he will stay in touch with us and I know our fans will continue to support him as he takes this next step."
