Kenny Lawler caught six passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to a 34-16 victory over the Ottawa Redblacks on Friday night at Tim Hortons Field. The win snapped Hamilton's five-game losing streak and improved their record to 5-11, while Ottawa remained winless at 0-15.
Lawler Shines in Tiger-Cats Victory
Lawler's performance was a bright spot in a challenging season for the Tiger-Cats, who were officially eliminated from playoff contention last week. The receiver also recorded his 400th career CFL reception during the game, a milestone witnessed by his younger brother, Kenzel Lawler, who was on the sidelines.
Kenzel, a defensive back, was claimed by the Redblacks earlier this season and has been with the team since August. He suited up for the last two games but did not dress for this one. After the game, the two brothers shared a moment at centre field, with Kenny removing his jersey, writing a message on it, and handing it to Kenzel before they hugged and parted ways.
Lawler chose to focus on the team's effort rather than his personal achievements. He said the game showed how much fight and resilience the team still has despite the season's struggles. He added that they know if they have games left, it means more opportunities to show the world who they really are.
Hamilton's Second-Half Surge Secures Win
Hamilton trailed 16-13 at halftime but came out with a determined effort in the second half. The Tiger-Cats scored three consecutive touchdowns while dominating field possession, keeping Ottawa's offense off the field. The Redblacks managed just three first downs in the second half and none in the third quarter, running only six offensive plays in that period.
Quarterback Harrison Frost went 28-for-35 passing for 342 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. His performance, combined with Lawler's receiving, helped Hamilton take control of the game. Lawler credited the team's hard, fast, and physical play on all three phases as the key to the victory.
Tiger-Cats head coach Scott Milanovich emphasized that everyone is playing, coaching, and fighting for their jobs, so every week's evaluation matters. He noted that the team has guys with good character who will continue to fight.
Redblacks' Winless Season Continues
For Ottawa, the loss extends a difficult season in which they have yet to win a game. Quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson came into the game with some momentum but finished 17-for-31 for 208 yards, unable to find a way through Hamilton's defense. He admitted the team got their butts kicked in the second half offensively and called it really frustrating.
Redblacks head coach Ryan Dinwiddie took responsibility for the second-half collapse, saying he did not call the best game and probably should have simplified things to let the players play more. He also acknowledged the fans' frustration, apologizing and stating he has not done a good enough job.
Ottawa has three games remaining. They visit the B.C. Lions next week before returning home to host the Toronto Argonauts and then wrapping up the regular season in Hamilton. No team in the modern era of the CFL has ever gone winless, and the Redblacks are hopeful they will not be the first, but time is running short.
