The trick is that we don’t know what sort of pressure the prime minister considers \u0027undue\u0027

Assertions by Justin Trudeau and the minister, Bill Blair, have inconsistencies that negate their credibility. They don’t withstand close examination. And neither man can be conceded the benefit of the doubt.

The leaked memo originated with Supt. Darren Campbell, a senior Mountie who was part of a conference call with Lucki in the wake of the shooting. Campbell’s detailed notes on the call indicate Lucki was upset that specifics on the weapons hadn’t been released. She “said that she had promised the Minister of Public Safety and the Prime Minister’s Office that the RCMP would release this information,” and “accused us of disrespecting her by not following her instructions.

But how can Blair believe Campbell is an exemplary officer of outstanding ability, yet also that he’s so careless he somehow imagined hearing Lucki make a very specific statement, and wrote it down in detail in his notes? If Campbell made it up, he obviously should be fired. If he didn’t — if Lucki did indeed promise Blair and Trudeau to get them the weapons list — Blair’s whole defence falls apart.

That makes three RCMP officials who all understood that political bosses in Ottawa were making demands and expected them to be obeyed. Is it possible all three somehow got the message wrong? And where would an RCMP commissioner get the impression the prime minister wanted a specific list of weapons, if no one had demanded it?
