The Tories don\u0027t necessarily have to choose Charest as leader to win the next election, but they need to attract the sort of people who are happy to see him run
The man has a history, no question about it. You can’t stay in politics at an elevated level as long as he has without accumulating some history. Perhaps it’s a glass-half-full thing that Charest’s record isn’t so obviously debilitating that the very notion of his running for the Conservative leadership is treated as farcical.
Pierre Poilievre’s people think otherwise, of course. Poilievre declared for the leadership as soon as Erin O’Toole had been relieved of it. Poilievre’s people would be pleased to have him accept the crown without opposition, and have been doing their best to dissuade Charest from spoiling that wish.
That could be the essence of this race, once it gets going. “I support lower taxes on consumers … He raised taxes on fuel. He raised the sales tax, and he made life more expensive for people when he was a provincial Liberal premier,”the Tory finance critic. Which is absolutely true. It’s no secret, of course, that Quebec tends to be a bit different from other provinces, with its own way of doing things. It has long paid the country’s highest taxes, and seems content to do so, because it also tends to support a more statist, interventionist government.
