Deep down inside, hidden in a spot where conscience seldom goes, even resolute Liberals must feel a tinge of embarrassment at how far and fast the Trudeau government has slid from the ideals that got it elected.
When Wilson-Raybould was eventually allowed to relate the treatment she’d received from Trudeau and other top Liberals, it was only under restrictions limiting the scope of what she could say. When that proved shocking enough to upset Canadians, Liberal-friendly heavyweights Gerald Butts and Michael Wernick were given a chance to undermine her claims. Demands for Wilson-Raybould to be allowed to answer their allegations have been summarily rejected.
And even in the deeply incestuous atmosphere of official Ottawa, is it not more than a little improper that a former clerk — now chairman of the board of Lavalin — could call up the current clerk in the midst of the furor and ask, clerk-to-clerk, why his new employer couldn’t just be awarded the get-out-of-jail pass for which it had been lobbying fervently for months? Do other corporate bigwigs get to call up Wernick and plead for special favours, or only predecessors who now head embattled...
