Does anyone believe this government, and especially the Trudeau\u002DMorneau tandem, has the belly or the backbone to begin addressing the cost of its largesse?
The lack of a normal opposition may be the only bright spot on the Liberals’ dark, stormy and unpromising horizon. The Liberals’ deal with NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh — no Parliament for three months in return for a pledge to think about offering paid leave to people who would much prefer a return to work — was supposed to protect the government from scrutiny while it busied itself handing out billions of dollars to anyone who happened to wander past and accept the money.
Better to let nature take its course, which, in the context of Ottawa, means carefully calculating the moment the Liberals are most vulnerable. That can’t come until the Conservatives have replaced Scheer, unless they’re eager to start a campaign led by the guy who lost the last one and hand it over to his replacement part way through. How do you print up lawn signs for that?
Just what would the Liberals run on, should they be forced to defend themselves before the electorate? Their headline promises have almost invariably come to naught. There is no new voting system. Canada’s Indigenous community seems just as discontented as ever. But spending money while offering heartfelt attestations of empathy and solidarity isn’t all that hard. Just about every premier, and a lot of mayors, saw their numbers rise as they took advantage of the opportunities the pandemic provided.
