Alberta voters will also soon face a choice of what sort of politicians we want to lead us, and who has the moral authority to govern.
You can bet that’s what Jason Kenney would be saying if it was Rachel Notley, Justin Trudeau or any other rival politician who was at the centre of a scandal like the one now consuming the top ranks of the United Conservative Party.Where the scandal ends up is still unknown, whether it be more resignations and firings, more fines from the election commissioner or a court case down the road.
When an audio recording emerged of UCP strategists discussing the kamikaze scheme, Kenney dismissed it. Of particular interest was a series of emails between Matt Wolf — Kenney’s current deputy chief of staff and a senior member of his leadership campaign team — and Callaway’s campaign manager Cameron Davies. The emails include draft ads, suggested talking points, plans for coordinated research and other collaboration, all with the aim of attacking Jean.
Important to note is that there is no evidence in the emails about any improper donations to Callaway’s campaign, which is what Gibson has been investigating. We’ll see in the days and weeks ahead what more there is to learn about that.In theory, the UCP leader could use that to say he knew nothing about what was going on behind the scenes of his campaign, under his very nose. Whether anyone will believe it is an open question.
