She got an educational grant to attend NASA's United Space School for creating a prototype of the small spacecraft that produces hydrogen fuel from comet and asteroid soil.

“It was like like a present,” she said, recalling the day she received the grant. “I can’t believe I’m here.” In between working on presentations, students attend lectures from various space experts and even partake in some team bonding. Early last week, the USS students took on NASA’s best soccer players for an exhibition game .

Her love for space developed in the fourth grade after she visited the Moscow Planetarium, her mother, Irina, told The Forum Daily, a news organization geared toward Russian-speaking Americans.
