From Bollywood to the Grammy Awards to the LVMH Prize in Paris, there’s no stopping the London menswear upstart Kaushik Velendra.

The short story is that Velendra, 29, spent what should have been the run-up to presenting his second collection on the London menswear calendar crafting, as many designers here have, at home.
The result is a group of moulded garments that look like aesthetic prosthetics—pieces that endow the wearer with superhero shoulders and body-armor pecs. Crafted from layers of heat resistant felt, they are part of Velendra’s vision of futuristic tailoring that combines the traditional body enhancement of conventional tailoring practice with his own performative upgrades. A film of the making of this collection is now the representation of what would have been his second show.

Velendra was born in Bengaluru, India, and says he “was struggling with poverty.” One of his first jobs was moulding and selling candles on the street, which is one early thread in his creative evolution.
