Though they usually have a call that sounds like “who cooks for you?”, barred owls do have unique screeches. - Wikimedia CommonsA few weeks ago, the strangest cry came from the trees behind my home in Dartmouth. It was a bizarre cross between crow and a monkey. It was at night so my mind cast about, trying to make sense of the foreign sound.
This continued for well over a week. It was outside my window one night and it sounded a kilometre away the next. It was my first time seeing an owl outside of captivity. Odd, given I spent my childhood in a place that had an occasional bear warning.A barred owl reacts to some blue jays that it was being harassed by, while it was biding the afternoon in a weeping European beech tree, in the Public Gardens on a fine autumn afternoon in Halifax in a file photo from Oct.15, 2021.- Tim Krochak
She explained their bodies are mostly head, with a small body cavity, long wings and long, skinny legs tucked up under the feathers. If you’ve never seen owl’s legs before, I suggest an immediate Google search. Think giraffe legs in fuzzy cowboy chaps. Nobody can have a bad day looking at those. Though owls can survive in small, wooded areas near people, that can lead to a more immediate threat: Poisons.
