For Vincent Fortier, Yousuf Karsh has a deep association with Ottawa and the Château.

And yet, for Vincent Fortier, there’s something sad and hard to articulate about the fact that it’s gone.

Having opened his gallery the same year that Pierre Trudeau repatriated the constitution, Fortier has worked in the fabled hotel for four decades. And during that time, he got to know Karsh, who kept a studio and lived in the Château with his wife Estrallita for 18 years before he died in 2002. Fortier even went to his funeral.

That’s how Fortier is certain the photograph stolen from the Château reading lounge is replaceable, at least theoretically. He says he has sold four original prints of the Churchill portrait from his gallery in the hotel, the last one around 20 years ago for what was then $13,000 .
