Karina Gould, a Liberal MP and former cabinet minister, has officially launched her bid for the party leadership, promising to prioritize the concerns of millennial voters and young families. She highlighted her commitment to reverse some of the policies implemented under Justin Trudeau's leadership, including pausing the planned increase to the carbon price and reconsidering changes to the capital gains inclusion rate. Gould faces a competitive field, including former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney and former finance minister Chrystia Freeland.
Liberal Party leadership contender Karina Gould has formally entered the race, expressing confidence that her ability to raise funds and secure the required signatures within two weeks signals strong momentum for her campaign. Ms.
Gould, a Member of Parliament and former cabinet minister, filed her paperwork at party headquarters on Thursday morning, joining former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney, former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, and MP Chandra Arya in meeting the deadline to pay a $50,000 deposit and garner at least 300 party member signatures. The remaining potential candidates have until 5 p.m. Thursday to follow suit. It may take the party up to 10 days to formally approve candidates.Currently, Ms. Gould has two MPs publicly endorsing her, a figure significantly lower compared to Mr. Carney and Ms. Freeland. As of Thursday morning, Mr. Carney boasted the backing of at least 10 cabinet ministers, while Ms. Freeland enjoys the support of four. Speaking to reporters in Ottawa on Thursday, Ms. Gould asserted that the ultimate decision in the leadership race lies with the party membership. She emphasized the enthusiastic response she has received from party members across the country, citing the numerous individuals who have offered donations, volunteered, and expressed eagerness to support her candidacy.Ms. Gould's campaign centers around her ability to connect with and advocate for millennial voters and young families. At 37 years old, she is the youngest candidate in the field. She highlighted her commitment to permanently removing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on children's clothing, diapers, strollers, and car seats, noting the current temporary GST holiday on these items. However, she also indicated her willingness to deviate from established Liberal policy in other areas. She expressed her intention to pause the planned increase to the consumer carbon price while maintaining its current level and is reconsidering the changes to the capital gains inclusion rate. Ms. Gould acknowledged the erosion of public trust in the Liberal party and attributed it, in part, to the party's perceived failure to address the concerns of Canadians. Both Ms. Gould and Ms. Freeland, as former cabinet ministers, are attempting to differentiate themselves from the policies implemented under Mr. Trudeau's leadership. Yet, they face scrutiny regarding their timing in raising these concerns, particularly as to why they did not speak out during their tenure in cabinet. Ms. Gould addressed this by referencing the principle of cabinet confidence, stating that discussions within cabinet remain confidential. However, she affirmed her adherence to her principles throughout her time in government
