Liberal leadership hopeful Karina Gould announces she has met the $125,000 fundraising deadline, praising supporters and criticizing the party's high entry fee.
Liberal leadership hopeful Karina Gould declared on Friday that she had successfully cleared the third financial hurdle for candidates, a $125,000 payment due that evening. Gould expressed gratitude to her supporters, highlighting their instrumental role in enabling her campaign to progress. The Liberal Party of Canada leadership race demands a substantial financial commitment from aspiring candidates, with a total of $350,000 required in installments.
The first two payments, each totaling $50,000, served as the initial launchpad for campaigns and granted access to the party's membership list. Gould emphasized that the 'very high' entry fee set by the party had unintended consequences, potentially discouraging individuals from entering the race. She pointed out that some potential candidates had chosen not to run due to the financial barrier, while others had already withdrawn from the competition. Gould credited her campaign's success in meeting the deadline to the widespread support she received from everyday Canadians, noting that 85 percent of her donations were $200 or less.Gould criticized the 'party establishment' for implementing policies that she believed restricted participation in the leadership contest. She asserted that the 'extremely aggressive fundraising deadline' was part of a deliberate effort to limit the pool of candidates. Four other candidates approved by the party, including Montreal businessman Frank Baylis and former deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland, have publicly confirmed their intention to continue in the race to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Baylis expressed confidence in meeting the Feb. 7 deadline, while Freeland's campaign announced that she had already paid the required fee. Ruby Dhalla, former MP for Brampton-Springdale, also confirmed that she deposited the payment on Friday.
